Description:

A fantastic opportunity to explore a remote but beautiful part of Scotland.

Ardnamurchan is the most westerly port of mainland Britain and one part of the West Highland Peninsulas. We will be exploring a varied landscape with a stunning coastline. Beautiful white sandy beaches overlook the small isles of Eigg, Muck and Rum while a rocky coastline around Ardnamurchan adds some drama to the coast with pounding seas and plenty of scope for long exposure photography. Atlantic Oakwoods on the shores of Loch Sunart provide some wonderful autumn colour which is complimented by inland lochs, rocky bays and manmade features including Ardnamurchan lighthouse and Castle Tioram.

Description:

A fantastic opportunity to explore a remote but beautiful part of Scotland. The Ardnamurchan peninsula is the UK’s most westerly mainland point. It is a is a quiet, rugged landscape of lochs, ancient Atlantic oakwoods, volcanic landscapes and stunning beaches. The workshop will be based in Moidart one of 5 areas of land comprising Ardgour, Moidart, Morvern, Sunart and Ardnamurchan. We will be working in Moidart, Sunart and Ardnamurchan as well as the area to the north which includes Arising, Morar and Mallaig. Locations will include:

Loch Moidar and Castle Tioram (pronounced Cheerum)

River Sheil for its old bridge and autumn colours

Ariundle Oakwoods National Nature Reserve which comprises some of the best preserved areas of Atlantic Oak woods in the country.

Ardnamurchan Lighthouse – the most westerly point on mainland Britain.

The fabulous white sandy beaches at Santa Bay, Portuairk and Bay MacNeil.

Arisaig and Morar with their aqua seas and fabulous beaches including Camusdarach beach made famous in the 80’s film Local Hero.

Loch Sunart, a tranquil area with some wonderful rocky bays and inlets.

The photography side of the workshop will be accompanied by some time with the computer looking at post processing using Lightroom and Photoshop. We will cover workflow and how to get the best from your images as well as looking at some more advanced techniques including panoramas, bracketing and focus stacking. I am keen to promote a relaxed and informal atmosphere on my workshops and there will be plenty of time for group discussion and image review.

The format of each day will vary depending on the weather and locations but we aim to take sunrise (8am) and sunset (6pm). Dinner in the evening will be on location in a pub, either locally or in Arisaig. Due to the remote location there are not many local eateries so we may be visiting the same establishment on several occasions.

Why choose a Scotland workshop with me?

I have been coming to Scotland annually for the last 15 years. It is somewhere I feel a complete affinity for and somewhere I have got to know really well. It is a landscape that inspires me and one that I love to photograph.

This workshop is based in a large shared house which I feel is an ideal way to explore the Highlands. Breakfast can be as early or as late as we need it to be and we have more flexibility than we would have in a hotel. The reception areas provide a comfortable environment for relaxed evenings of image sharing and post processing as well as complete relaxation or even a game of pool or table tennis.

This workshop will be a small group of 4  and the whole session will be run on a relaxed basis with the emphasis on fun and great photography. At the heart of all my workshops is the joy that being out in the natural world brings.

My workshops are relaxed, fun fill sessions that forge friendships and inspire creativity.
